Orson Welles’s Early Life and Family
He was born in 1915 in Wisconsin. His parents’ names were Head Welles and Ives Welles. After a couple of years, his father and mother separated in 1919. Before that, his father was an inventor and was quite famous for inventing the bicycle lamp.
But good days stayed with them for a short time. Soon, his father became an alcoholic, and he had no work at that time. When Welles was only nine years old, his mother died of hepatitis.
After that, he had to go through a hectic period. After that, his father took him to the east, and they returned to Illinois after traveling. There, his father had a hotel.
But that hotel burned down, and the father and son took shelter on the roads again. His father died in 1930 when Welles was just 15 years old.
Before this, he announced that he would stop seeing his father. And Welles felt guilty for this. Soon, in 1931, he graduated and got a scholarship to study at Harvard College. He read at the Art Institute of Chicago.

After the death of his father, Welles traveled to Europe. There, he made his debut on the stage in 1931. He made his debut in Ashley Duke’s adaptation. After that, he started working in several other theaters.
His roles were small, but within one year, he performed at the Abbey Theater and then went to London. However, he didn’t get a work permit, so he returned to the United States.
Theater (1936- 1938)
Within a couple of years, he was successful in a couple of projects he started with the Federal Theatre Project. The project was a relief measure to employ writers, artists, theater workers, and directors. In 1935, John Houseman invited Welles to join him. Welles said in this matter,
“Roosevelt once said that I was the only operator in history who ever illegally siphoned money into a Washington project.”
Later, the theatre became so famous that Welles started to do excellent work. One of the first productions of the theatre was Macbeth, an adaptation of William Shakespeare. There were 150 cast, and the cast was entirely African American. Thus, the name of the production became Voodoo Macbeth.
After that, there were other plays such as Hurse Eats Hat, The Second Hurricane, and The Cradle Will Rock. After that, he and Houseman started their own company named Mercury Theater.
Radio (1936- 1940)
