Cameron's 4K Remastered Edition To Hit US Cinemas For One Night

People have anticipitated an upgraded re-release of James Cameron’s The Abyss for the longest time. And at long last, we have been given some good news. 20th Century Studios has officially announced that a remastered 4K version of the work now exists!

There is however a condition that the remastered take will be available for US cinemas only on 6 December.

If you have not watched the movie the film follows the events after a nuclear bomb mysteriously sinks and a private oil rig crew led by the foreman Bud Brigman (Ed Harris) that is recruited to join a group of Navy SEALs on a search and rescue effort.

The team soon finds a mysterious force under the life-or-death odyssey 25,000 feet below the ocean surface. It has the power to either change the world or destroy it.

It stars Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and Michael Biehn in the central roles. The movie arrived in cinemas back in 1989.

Cameron has expressed his thoughts saying, “If you haven’t seen the film before, this is the way to experience it, and if you have, it will be like the first time all over again. So, get out to the theaters and enjoy.”

Check back in for any updates as to when it could get aired in the U.K. cinemas or other potential home entertainment releases.

IGN has shared, “The Abyss might have been a long, sometimes plodding movie, even before the eventual director’s cut, but it remains a quality genre picture with more going on than your average movie about alien visitors and those they visit.”
