My Personal Color Analysis Test Results: What I Learned?
Are you someone who wants to be fashionable? Have there been times when you have just nailed a certain look and received hundreds of compliments? Have you ever faced a day when everyone keeps asking you why you look low or says, “Where is the light on your face?”
Will you be shocked if I tell you, it is all about the color you choose to wear that day that makes you glow or dull? Of course, your mood or health matters, but color plays a major role when you consider your style and its relationship to your features.
Let me break it up for you! Recently, I came across a reel on Instagram where a girl explained that if you have a certain skin tone and undertone, there are certain colors that you should wear and apply. However, I did not know my skin tone, and to my utter horror, I have never tried to find out!
I mostly buy clothes, accessories, and makeup that I like, either because of their looks, colors, or reviews! Guess what? What suited the reviewer might not suit me. I kid you not; I was intrigued. I kept thinking about the appropriate color to suit me and how it would make my face glow!
The conceptualization of personal color analysis and how one can use it to learn their appropriate color palette was real! It was very much in practice and has been so in the fashion industry for many years. Even celebrity stylists use this theory to design their clothes for public events, press tours, etc.
The Seasonal Color Analysis
This is where the personal color analysis came into the picture. I started reading about the concept and tried to understand its reasoning! I am a millennial, so initially, this was quite exclusive for celebrities and influencers! Even the Celebrity Color analysis is quite trending nowadays!
However, as I researched, I realized anyone could take a color analysis test to know which color palette best suits them. This encouraged me to venture into the world of color analysis and how it is important to decide whether it benefits us regarding our overall style, look, and appearance.
Have you seen the trending reels on Instagram about color analysis? Several evaluations and analyses related to Seasonal Color Analysis (SCA) have been conducted, which can give you a better idea of how colors influence natural beauty.
Before we discuss how important color is to our wardrobe, makeup, and accessory choices, let’s consider color’s natural beauty. Colors’ cohesiveness brings out the natural glow of your skin tone.
When we are here to talk about seasons, let me introduce you to the different color palettes that are specific to each season. But we will get into these later, first let us discuss how colors play an important role in fashion and how they are used to create trends in fashion, marketing, promotions and other significant media posts.
The Role of Color in Fashion
Every season, we follow a different fashion, and this has been going on since ancient times. What does that tell you about the role of color in fashion? Are colors deeply integrated into how we style ourselves and the message they carry?
Often, what we wear symbolizes our identity, our mood for that day or event, and whether we support the event we are attending. The fashion we follow every season is important to stay relevant, protect us from climate change, and inspire others.
What I have learned from this relationship between color and fashion regarding seasonal development is that with every changing season, fashion trends evolve, reflecting the stylistic preferences and practical needs of the consumers. Each season has its color palette.
Therefore, you can develop a more appropriate representation of the color that suits your skin tone and undertone. From bold hues in the summer to soft pastels in spring, color helps you relate to the environment around you. Imagine Celebrity Color analysis helping you imagine the undertones!
How to Take the Quiz: Instructions
So, I developed a survey of six questions centered on a certain age group. The 21 individuals include my colleagues, siblings, and friends. There are nine men and 12 women in the respondent group.
Of the 21 people, only one is in the 36- to 45-year-old bracket, four are 15- to 25-year-olds, and the majority are 26- to 35-year-olds! So, our target group is those who are neither impulsive nor old enough to stop following fashion trends or modern styles.
The responses give me an idea about how individuals are categorized based on their color palette of warm/ cool, clear/ muted, and light/dark! These characterize how you can compare your clothes, accessories, and makeup based on your skin tone.
I learned how color is used to develop a better fashion sense and style it effectively. The seasonal color analysis is used to design how I present myself beautifully and, thus, create an effective capsule wardrobe.
Responses of the Quiz!
Now, to the questions that helped me get a better idea of how color plays an important role in fashion, style, and appearance. Out of 21 people, 17 agreed that their choices in clothes, accessories, and makeup are influenced by their favorite color.
Four individuals needed to be surer about this influence. This question is significant because it shows how some people prefer some colors over others. Here, we can learn two things! A person prefers a certain color when it looks good on them so this choice might dictate their seasonal color palette.
However, it also needs to be clarified because if they like the color, regardless of whether it looks good on them, they are messing up their fashion sense and appearance. Fourteen people think white, black, and royal blue look good on them; three think green, aqua, gray, and pastels look good on them!
Two people think the red, pink, violet, and brown color range looks good on them, while two people think the yellow, orange, coral and peach color range looks good. When the respondents were asked about their consideration regarding a certain range of colors when buying clothing and accessories, ten people agreed.
Three people said they were confused; eight claimed they bought whatever they liked. The last question asked about the factors influencing the colors you choose when purchasing accessories, makeup, and clothes.
Twelve people consider their skin tone when shopping and nine people think of all the factors: skin tone, hair color, and eye color!
For a moment I thought I would ask everyone to get a color consultant but then they did not have any time or money for that! Wink! Well, I did! Read my blog on the same.
What did i Learn?
After receiving the responses to the questions in the survey form, I realized that many people coordinate with the seasonal palette without even knowing it. Also, they use different kinds of fabrics, such as chiffon, cotton, silk, wool, and others, based on their seasonal color interpretation.
From breathable and lightweight materials in the summer to insulating textures and fabrics in the winter, fabrics are an integral part of your preference for both style and protection. Along with fabrics, you also need to remember layering techniques.
In fashion, it is about what you wear and how you wear it. When it comes to seasonal changes, based on temperature fluctuations, creativity, and versatility will allow you to mix and match, style outfits, and wear what you are comfortable with, depending on different seasons and weather conditions.
When we talk about fashion and styling, accessories cannot be left far behind. Accessories play a crucial role in how I style myself. For every event or occasion that I attend, I choose different accessories, from the bags that I carry to the shoes that I match with my outfit.
I feel accessories. Add personality to your overall outfit choice and a flare that provides comfort and functionality. People coordinate color based on their preferences and seasonal changes, mostly unaware of the fact.
What Does it Mean?
If I am taking all the respondents at face value, I must go with the options they selected in the colors they think they look good in. So, most of the respondents have chosen the colors white, black, and royal blue, which are identified as cool; thus, the winter color palette is appropriate for them.
The respondents chose yellow, orange, coral, and peach, so they thought the spring color palette belonged to them. The autumn color palette is theirs for those who chose red, pink, violet, and brown colors! So, if you have an almond skin tone, you must use brown colors which enhance your overall appearance!
The color palette of summer has a range of colors, including green, aqua, gray, and pastels, so if the respondents chose this range, this is for them. This evaluation taught me how some people can learn their color analysis without even taking the test.
This is what I mean when we talk about the theory of color fashion designers use! Designers use swatches of colors and color charts to create different prints, designs, and appearances. They also use racks or mannequins to check whether the color combination and coordination will look good.
Personal Experience of The Seasonal Color Analysis
So, after creating a quiz to understand the significance of colors in our daily lives, marketing, and advertising, I took a test myself. However, I took a 16-season color analysis that is more professional. The free quiz was created by Frump Fighters, which I downloaded and then started answering the questions.
The quiz has clues that help us interpret the best match for me! It helps us learn the color palette that is most suitable for our skin tones and undertones. Furthermore, it also helped me understand how my hair color, skin color, and eye color are enhanced.
So, the quiz first instructs me to clean all my makeup from my face before I start answering the questions. I printed out this sheet of instructions. However, I will provide a link to this quiz here so you can take a seasonal color analysis test yourself.
It would be best if you cleaned all your makeup and had a hand mirror and a pencil. Now, let’s sit somewhere. You will get natural light; it will be better if direct sunlight hits your face. I avoid all artificial light because only natural light can help me to understand the appropriate color palette.
There are specific color palettes that suit your skin tones and undertones. We even have a 16-season color analysis which contributes to the color palettes. Let us explore the different palettes and how they relate to the color palettes!
Color Palettes | Skin Tone | Eye Color | Hair Color |
---|---|---|---|
Warm vs. Cool | Yellow-peach undertone vs. Pink-blue undertone | Glints of gold, swirly, and golden ring spots | Red, Auburn, or dark brown |
Clear vs. Muted | Gray-blue vs. hazel | Pale, symmetrical pattern with speckles | Medium or low contrast blending with blonde color |
Deep vs. Light | Pale or Pinky skin vs. Peachy and warm skin | Brown eyes with a circle “halo” around the pupil or sunburst pattern | Brown hair with a glint of red to black hair |
Results
When I evaluated all the aspects, what did I find? My hair color is somewhere between brown and black, along with some hint of red! After assessing my hair color, I evaluated my eye color and saw that it was brown. At times, when I look closely under sunlight, there is a sunburst pattern.
After evaluating color palettes regarding skin tone, I have peachy, warm skin with a yellow undertone. So, if you follow the quiz that I took, you will realize that my color palette matched Deep vs. light, which means I should choose colors from the light summer palette and the deep winter palette.
The colors that will suit my skin tone and undertones are neutrals such as white, dark shades such as black, and accentuated colors such as Royal blue. For the summer palette, I should choose pastels, peaches, orange-red, light browns, aqua such as sky-blue teal, and muted colors such as gray and warm green.
So, I can determine that my skin tone is warm and golden, which is relatable to light, fair, medium, and tan. These features contribute to my understanding of what color I should choose for my clothes, accessories, and makeup.
What Does Fashion Science Claim about Seasonal Color Analysis?
I am sure some of you know that there is an iOS app that identifies a person’s season based on the selfie portrait they take. The seasonal palette can be decided based on the app’s augmented reality capabilities. The color analysis app helps a lot when identifying your undertones!
Apart from the selfie portraits, the app might also use live video to decide a person’s season. If you do a live stream through the app, you learn about the colors that look good on you and the colors that look bad on you.
If you visit a clothing store alone, this app can be quite beneficial as it will help you decide the colors you should choose when buying clothes, accessories, and makeup. However, people face several challenges when they use this app!
Starting from the composition of the portrait selfie, there is a concern with artificial and natural lighting. There is also concern regarding the rightful races, genders, and geographies because the analytics do not go well with the classification of seasonal color palettes.
Classification of Features
Several factors influence features when we classify them! The elbow approach is one such cluster where the multiple body parts match, thus leading to similar results. It is represented by similar clustering, including skin, iris, and hair!
Another approach to classifying the features is hierarchical clustering, where comparing the portraits of the individuals creates a tree structure. You wonder how close the features are to someone else, probably with someone related to you by blood.
Apart from both these approaches, we have the seasonal color interpretation. This approach has two segments: warm/cool colors and dark/light colors, thus creating a seasonal color palette for us.
Did you know that fashion designers use color in several ways and as a source of inspiration to create diverse collections? Designers use other elements, such as embellishments and embroidery, to influence how the color works and coordinates accordingly.
Four Cluster Analysis
I am here to talk about fashion regarding four cluster analyses because seasonal color analyses help identify upcoming styles and trends. This is why there are four seasons, and accordingly, there are fashion weeks dedicated to these seasons.
Why is it important to interpret every season in colors? Have you ever wondered why you probably don’t like wearing black in summer or stark red in winter? Every season has its color, tone, and texture.
Nature changes its color from the flowers and plants, leading to changes in the landscape. The rivers, the mountains, the terrain, and the sky all appear different in the changing seasons. Like that, we all belong to a certain season, more appropriately to a seasonal color palate!
Similarly, we are influenced by these changes by imagining the colors and how they resemble the changes in the seasons. The color palettes come from this concept, which influences which color palette will suit our skin tones and undertones the best based on the seasons.
After reading about the seasonal palette of color for everyone, I was not surprised to learn that designers use different colors to create their signature style. Sometimes, color conveys a message that the designer or the marketing team wants to advertise or promote globally.
Summer Fashion Trends
For example, summer has breezy vibes, so you can choose light and airy fabrics. Buy vibrant, eye-catching fabrics with bold patterns to capture the essence of summer.
You can opt for maxi skirts and wide-legged pants with crop tops. Do not forget flowy dresses! For men, flower prints and quirky prints on white or dark background fabrics will go well with shorts and light-colored trousers!
Whenever you are coordinating clothes with summer skin tones, try choosing fabrics such as chiffon, cotton, and linen, as they provide comfort and breathability. The flowy fabrics also help you stay cool and stay comfortable in warm weather. Oversized sunglasses, statement earrings, or a necklace with colorful sandals will keep it fun and easy!
Furthermore, during summer, making a statement saying wearing eye-catching colors captures the essence of the summer. Therefore, if you have summer skin tones, go for vibrant colors like pastry, aqua, and others.
Autumn Fashion Trends
When it comes to the seasonal color palette for autumn, the best way to describe it is cozy vibes. It is all about wearing earthly hues like burgundy, olive green, rust, and mustard yellow.
Just like changing for ages, your skin tone reflects the early colors in your style. When it comes to autumn, you must add dimensions and depth to your wardrobe by learning the art of layering! When you go outdoors, wearing colors like burnt orange, hunter green, or terra cotta helps you keep neutral tones.
You must consider colors when you use many accessories, such as jackets, sweaters, cardigans, and scarves. This is the perfect way to use colors that will accentuate your skin tone, hair color, and eye color.
Remember shoes, as they complement your outfit for the day. Also, do not forget to buy clothes and accessories in burnt sienna, glacial blue, brown, silver, olive drab, and others.
Winter Fashion Trends
Coming to the winter color palette, let’s keep everything statement! Starting from black, white, and Royal blue, you can wear turtlenecks, chunky knit sweaters, and CableNet accessories to keep you stylish and warm.
Let’s remember, which adds to your undertones. Using jackets and coats as accessories, along with some oversight silhouettes, will define your fashion. Going with cool shades will help you alternate your style if you have a winter color palette.
It will enhance your overall look and complete your ensemble with scarves, gloves, beanies, and a mouse. Try to select pop colors such as neon pink or bright yellow, which will act as a contrast against black, white, and blue.
Colors such as navy, creams, emerald, burgundy, black, and others make your skin rich in texture and glow. Traditional white and black accentuate deep, rich colors such as burgundy, emerald, and green.
Spring Fashion Trends
Coming to the spring color palette, the fashion trends I will tell you to go for are renewal and freshness. Colors, mostly pastels such as mint, green, lavender, blush, pink, and baby blue, are perfect for your skin tone.
You can wear tops, skirts, accessories, and dresses with botanical motives and floral prints. These elements accentuate your overall facial features and add a romantic and feminine touch.
For men, adding accessories such as trench coats, coats, denim jackets, or cardigans in solid colors, such as grey or black, will help you transition into your spring color palette. When you belong to the Spring color palette, you should use airy hues along with pastel versions!
Imagine a rainbow? Close your eyes and imagine different elements such as melting snow, the first blooms of the season, and a woolly sky, along with traditional Easter tones! Once you have this image going, can you imagine wearing pale peach, baby blue, soft yellow, blush pink, or lavender? You have spring fashion colors.
I will get a better version of my skin tone and undertones if I use spring colors. So, my fashion sense will develop significantly.
Combination And Contrast of Color
When you use colors in your daily life, it is important to combine and contrast accordingly. This will help you in the long term to learn what is essential to enhance your overall appearance.
For example, the primary colors blue or cyan, red or magenta, and yellow are combined, depending on the amount, creating various shades of color. For example, purple is created from red and blue, orange from red and yellow, and green from yellow and blue.
Like this, the brightness and depth of colors help us understand how they can be styled together. If you add grey to bright colors, you can see the intensity of color and create several nuances and shades.
When you create contrast, warm and cool, your skin tone shines brighter. Of course, there are several warmer and cooler tones you can create contrast with a one-tone color combination. Among all the colors that you use to style yourself, black and white are the strongest colors!
Recent times and culture have been all about visual representation and the use of texture and shape to create more lucrative products and services. If you use colors with your products, there is a high probability that your product will be successful.
Now, you need to remember the purpose of the product or service, be it masculine or feminine, frivolous or reliable, trendy or timeless, or synthetic or natural!
Meaning and Association of Color with Appearance!
Did you know that colors have different meanings and symbolism? Do you know why we are so considerate regarding colors in our clothing, accessories, and makeup? It is because colors offer us emotional appeal!
Through colors, you can convey your perspective and express yourself. You can connect with people by evoking emotions. Furthermore, this process of effect and meaning teaches you more about colors.
Colors are subjective; hence, it might be different for everyone. I am sure you also learned a lot about color symbolism, such as yellow symbolizes optimism, happiness, and the sun. You will also know that there are both positive and negative associations of colors!
For example, yellow is a positive color, while red is considered a danger or, at times, passion! In one culture, black is regarded as a symbol of sadness and death, while in some cultures, it is adorned at parties and occasions.
This also applies to white. Hence, I would inform you that color is interpreted and evaluated in different countries and cultures; thus, including it in your wardrobe should be a smart and inclusive decision. When you learn about the significance of color, you realize how important it is to tell a story.
Significance of Color in Marketing Trends!
Why is there color forecasting in the fashion industry? Do you wonder about the significance of color in marketing trends? Do you believe in predicting one color or a color palette that will be popular for a certain period or season?
According to a report conducted by Marketsplash, colors are significant in marketing trends. Colors shape brand perception! Almost 90% of consumers always form initial judgments based on color alone.
Therefore, it influences how brands use colors to convince or manipulate customers. 80% of brand recognition comes from color, underscoring the competitive landscape and creating an undeniable influence.
Why do I say that color matters for Brands? Brands express and connect with their customers through colors. Customers identify and relate to Brands through these colors, thus driving decision-making. Strong emotional connections with customers can be developed through colors and the logo!
Finishing Off…
To summarize, I did two types of analysis: one, where I asked others about their seasonal color palette and preferences, and another, my color analysis. Of course, I did not pay any color analyst; however, I took a free quiz based on personal and seasonal color analysis.
From the test, I determined my undertone and seasonal palate. Of course, I might be wrong because I just followed instructions. However, I recently started following the colors and patterns, and the colors help me look good.
They enhance my skin tone, facial features, and body shape. Apart from my test, I also asked several other individuals about the significance of color for them when they shop. Many of them agree that colors do matter to them when they are choosing their clothing, accessories, or makeup!
If you ask me, how can I tell what color suits me? When I applied the color palette suggestions to my practical applications daily, I learned that the right choice of color improves my taste in attire and fashion, along with my complexion.
Comment on your favorite color and whether it relates to the overall probable color palette you use! If you still need to do color analysis, personal or seasonal, which is quite similar, I suggest you go for it.
